The Saatva HD mattress is a hybrid mattress, combining latex, memory foam, and coil springs for maximum resilience and comfort. It’s 15 ½ inches thick and is a firm mattress designed for heavy sleepers.

The bed is made up of five principal layers:

  • Euro pillow top with an organic cotton cover, which includes an antimicrobial fabric treatment. The cover is hand-tufted to keep its shape.
  • The top layer is Talalay latex with 5-zone support for a buoyant feel. This latex foam resists body impressions and sleeps cool while also providing support for the back, shoulders, and hips.
  • The next layer is a comfort layer of memory foam and support foam, designed to provide contouring and cushioning along with extra joint support.
  • The bottom layer is a high-durability steel coil base of tempered 12.5-gauge coils (25% stronger than industry standard), creating a solid and durable foundation that will support the mattress throughout its lifespan. The coils are threaded with 17-gauge helical wire, which helps provide motion isolation.
  • Finally, high-density foam rails provide edge support along the top, bottom, and sides of the mattress. This makes it easy to get in and out of bed and avoids some of the edge support problems common to latex and memory foam mattresses.

The Saatva HD is a firm bed.

This firmness level has been chosen to particularly suit heavy sleepers between 300 and 500 pounds. This firmness prevents excessive sinkage, maintaining the bed’s shape and level of support for larger sleepers. The additional edge support keeps the bed feeling firm even at the edges.

A firm bed resists body impressions and provides more support than a softer mattress. Couples of mixed sizes may find the mattress firmness is too much for lighter sleepers.

The bed’s price varies by the mattress dimensions and the price for each size is shown in the following table. Note that this cost will be higher if you’re adding optional extras, such as the high-durability foundation.

Twin XL$1599
Split King$3198
Cal King$2799

Saatva HD Mattress Breakdown

To help you establish whether the Saatva HD should be your mattress of choice, we’ve answered a few common questions. For more on our mattress review process, check out our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

Saatva is a byword for material quality among online mattress sellers. All materials used in the Saatva HD appear to be of high quality, and this is borne out by customer testimonials. Saatva mattresses are also made using eco-friendly materials where possible.

Like many of its online competitors, there’s little long-term performance data due to Saatva’s relatively short operational period, but signs indicate that it’s a durable mattress that’s likely to last out its expected lifespan so long as proper usage is observed.

How long will it last?

Saatva’s FAQ states that the mattress should last 10-15 years if users follow the manufacturer’s advice. Heavy sleepers can sometimes experience shorter mattress lifespans, but the Saatva HD is specifically tailored to support heavy sleepers and it should have the lifespan to match.

The materials used in the Saatva should keep it in good shape for many years. We expect it will last at least seven.

How well does it conform to my body?

The Saatva HD is a firm mattress that prioritizes support, so it conforms relatively well for heavy sleepers but may not be ideal for lighter sleepers. The Talalay latex layer does help the bed to feel more contouring than pure innerspring beds, however.

Ultimately, the Saatva HD’s strengths lie in offering support and comfort for heavier sleepers over conforming.

Couples of mixed weights are the ones most likely to need more conforming than the mattress offers. Anyone under roughly 250 pounds may find the mattress is too firm.

Is the edge supportive?

The Saatva HD bed features impressive edge support thanks to the high-density foam encasing the top, bottom, and sides of the mattress. The result is a large sleepable area perfect for edge sleepers. The mattress will also take edge sitting without noticeable sagging.

This is an excellent feature for larger sleepers who may need a large sleepable area. A lack of edge support can “shrink” the effective sleeping area of a mattress, so the Saatva HD’s robust support will ensure you have the maximum sleep area and can get in and out of bed easily.

Does it sleep hot?

Innerspring mattresses provide great airflow on average, and the Saatva HD benefits from this level of temperature control. Despite some popular misconceptions, latex doesn’t sleep hot, so the foam elements of this mattress are the most likely candidates for heat retention—but these are offset by the hybrid construction of the mattress. The natural motion of the innersprings will help to move air around as you sleep instead of trapping it in the mattress.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

Many mattresses can emit odors when new. In extreme cases, these odors can be unpleasant and linger for a long time.

As the Saatva HD is a hybrid mattress, some off-gassing may occur when the bed is new. If off-gassing does occur, it should dissipate within a few days at most, so it pays to be patient.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

Innerspring mattress can often transfer motion to quite a large degree, but the Saatva HD combines innersprings with latex and foam layers that minimize this problem. The result is that the Saatva HD features better motion isolation than comparable innerspring beds, even for heavier sleepers.

Who is Best Suited for a Saatva HD Mattress?

The Saatva HD mattress is the perfect bed for heavy sleepers. Custom designed for sleepers in the 300 pounds range, the mattress offers strong support, a firm surface, and targeted pressure relief on stress points like the hips, joints, and shoulders. The additional edge support also gives it a large sleepable area that’s perfect for larger body types or larger couples.

Lighter sleepers will likely prefer the Saatva flagship mattress. The Saatva HD can be too firm for light sleepers. Mattress support typically works by pushing back as the body sinks into the bed, so a light sleeper may not activate the mattress support systems.

Back and side sleepers will get the most out of the mattress, as it provides excellent support in key pressure point areas. Heavier stomach sleepers may not experience the full effect but should still experience acceptable levels of comfort.

The Saatva HD is also ideal for heavy sleepers looking for a bed with a traditional innerspring feel. Though the Saatva HD is a hybrid mattress, it maintains a classic coil mattress feel, with the level of bounce most people associate with a mattress. This can benefit anyone who finds that alternative mattress options are too different from a traditional mattress.

Ready to Buy a Saatva HD?

Before you make your final decision, let’s take a look at a few other key details you need to know about the Saatva mattress: its sleep trial, warranty, and shipping and delivery details.

Sleep Trial

Saatva offers a 120-day return policy, beginning on the date of delivery. If you’re unsatisfied with the mattress at that time, Saatva will collect and refund the mattress cost less a $99 transportation charge. Although there’s a generous window for the sleep trial, the transportation cost could be a concern for some buyers on a budget.

The Saatva HD warranty covers a non-prorated period of 20 years. For the first 2 years of the 20-year period, Saatva will replace a mattress determined as defective with a new mattress. After this point, Saatva will make repairs and re-cover a mattress, with a transportation cost of $99 each way.

Saatva also offers a “Fairness Replacement Option.” If opting for this, a customer will keep his or her original mattress if reporting a warranty issue and can have a new Saatva mattress delivered and installed at a discounted rate relative to the original mattress cost. This discount progressively reduces over the course of the 20-year warranty. When choosing this option, no transportation fees are applicable.

This warranty remains subject to proper usage per the manufacturer’s usage instructions.

Availability and Delivery

The Saatva HD mattress can be purchased via Saatva’s website. Delivery is free for customers in the contiguous US and includes in-home set-up with white glove delivery. There is also an option for mattress and frame removal at no additional charge. If returning the mattress during its trial period or returning on the warranty, a transportation charge of $99 will apply.

Customers will be given a 4-hour window on delivery day and there’s no cancellation fee should a customer need to reschedule their delivery.
