Finding the right mattress is challenging. Helix rose to popularity by making the selection process a little easier with the Sleep Quiz. Sleepers enter in information about sleep position, preferred feel, and more, and the quiz suggests Helix mattresses that might fit those needs and preferences. Since Helix has a wide array of mattresses, there are plenty of options to suit a variety of mattress tastes.

Helix offers three mattress lines: the Helix, the Helix LUXE, and the Birch. In this review, we’ll focus on the flagship Helix mattress line. This mattress comes in six main models: the Sunset, the Moonlight, the Midnight, the Dusk, the Twilight, and the Dawn.

The Sunset, the Midnight, and the Twilight feature memory foam comfort layers. The Moonlight, the Dusk, and the Dawn feature a mixture of synthetic latex and polyfoam.

Read on. We’ll share information on the Helix mattress and note some key differences between the models.

Helix Mattress Overview

Helix Mattress

Helix

With six unique mattress firmness levels to choose from, a Helix mattress should work for any type of sleeper.

Construction

All the models of the Helix mattresses are 12 inches tall and composed of multiple layers. However, the specific construction varies.

The Sunset, the Midnight, and the Twilight share similar constructions. Each mattress uses a top layer of Memory Plus Foam, which is Helix’s high-density foam designed to relieve pressure points and provide contouring. The next layer of the Sunset mattress uses Helix Dynamic Foam, and the Midnight and Twilight feature high-grade polyfoam. While the materials differ, the goal of this layer is the same between the models: cushioning and support. The next layer of each mattress uses individually-wrapped coils, which are designed to contour to the body. Wrapping the coils individually also reduces motion transfer between the coils. The final layer of each mattress uses DuraDense Foam, which serves as the foundation for the rest of the mattress.

The Moonlight, the Dusk, and the Dawn also offer similar constructions. The top layers of these mattresses use Helix Dynamic Foam, which is a hybrid of latex and foam. This layer is designed for contouring and responsiveness. The second layer of each mattress is designed primarily for support and pressure relief. The Moonlight uses a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, the Dusk uses a layer of Memory Foam Plus, and the Dawn uses a layer of high-grade polyfoam. The next layer of the Moonlight, the Dusk, and the Dawn is a layer of wrapped coils, which provide deeper contouring. Additionally, the wrapping of the coils can help reduce motion transfer within the innerspring layer. Finally, the base of each mattress uses a layer of DuraDense Foam for support.

The innerspring layer of each Helix mattress also features reinforced edges for a sturdier perimeter. All of the mattresses use a cover that is composed of polyester and is designed to feel soft.

Firmness and Pricing

The Helix mattresses are divided between three firmness options: soft, medium, and firm. Below, we’ll note the list price for each size of each model. However, Helix also frequently offers additional discounts.

Helix Mattress Mattress Breakdown

Next, we’ll give you some more details on how we expect the Helix mattress to perform in some important areas. Since the Helix mattress comes in multiple models, the exact performance may vary between models and may feel different between sleepers. However, we’ll share factors that may influence the Helix mattress’s performance. To learn more about our review process, please see our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

Helix uses a number of high-quality materials that may make the mattresses more appealing.

Depending on the model, Helix mattresses use several unique foams that offer desirable traits, like contouring and cushioning. Additionally, the innerspring layer uses pocketed coils. Wrapping each spring individually can reduce the amount of motion transferred between springs.

Helix mattresses are also Oeko-Tex certified and CertiPUR-US certified, which indicates that they are free of an array of potentially harmful chemicals.

How long will it last?

Most hybrid mattresses last around 6-8 years, and we would expect the longevity of the Helix mattress to be similar. The Helix mattress is still relatively new to the market, so long-term data on the mattress’s life expectancy is not yet available. While the mattress features a number of high-quality components, specifications on the precise makeup of each mattress model are not publically available, so the projected longevity is difficult to judge.

How well does it conform to my body?

All of the Helix mattresses offer conforming, but the level of the conforming may vary between models. Each model uses multiple layers of foam, which can conform to the body to reduce pressure points. The innerspring layer of each mattress provides even deeper contouring, allowing heavier areas to sink in more.

While all models of the Helix mattress offer conforming, the softer mattresses are likely to offer more conforming since they allow sleepers to sink in more deeply. The softer Helix mattresses, like the Sunset and Moonlight, should provide exceptional conforming. The firmer mattresses, like the Twilight and Dawn, should still provide some conforming but with less sinking in.

Is the edge supportive?

Each model of the Helix mattress features reinforced edges. This reinforcement can make the edge feel sturdier than some mattresses, making it easier to sit or sleep near the perimeter of bed without it feeling excessively unstable.

Does it sleep hot?

The Helix mattress’s innerspring layer allows greater breathability than most all-foam bases. This can allow for airflow that could help dissipate heat, so Helix mattresses should be able to support a cool night’s sleep.

However, since softer models offer closer conforming, they may be slightly more likely to trap heat than firmer models.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

Like most foam mattresses, Helix mattresses may have an odor at first. The smell is not dangerous, and the odor should fade in a few hours to a few days. If the odor bothers you, just leave it in a well-ventilated area until it airs out.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The degree of motion isolation may vary between Helix models, but all of them can help reduce motion transfer. The Helix Dynamic Foam and Memory Plus Foam absorb much of the motion caused by someone stirring during the night, which can prevent it from transferring across the surface of the bed. Additionally, the pocketed coils reduce the spread of motion across the innerspring layer for even greater motion isolation. However, since coils give the mattress bounce, they may also cause some slight motion transfer, so the Helix mattress might not isolate motion to the extent of some all-foam mattresses.

Who is Best Suited for a Helix Mattress?

Ultimately, mattress feel is a personal preference, which means there may be a good deal of variety in what sort of mattress feels ideal for each individual. Since the Helix mattress offers six models, however, it can accommodate most sleep styles.

Because weight influences how much pressure is applied to the surface of the mattress, a sleeper’s weight can affect how a mattress feels. Helix models come in three firmness options, which can accommodate most weights. Lightweight sleepers may prefer a softer model, and heavier individuals may prefer a firmer model. While the Helix mattress can accommodate many weight groups, it may not provide enough support for some sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds. However, the Helix Nightfall is specifically designed for heavier weights, so it may be a good option.

The Helix mattress is also a great choice if you’re not quite sure what you’re looking for in a mattress. Helix’s Sleep Quiz can help narrow down your search and direct you towards mattresses that may better fit your preferences, even if you can’t quite pinpoint what they are.

The Helix mattress’s hybrid design makes it well suited to couples. The top layers of foam offer motion isolation, which can prevent disturbances from one partner moving during the night. The innerspring layer offers extra bounce, which may be beneficial during sex.

The Helix mattress is also a good option for sleepers with one preferred sleep position. Helix clarifies which mattresses are designed to accommodate which sleep positions. This can make it easier to select a model that can work with your preferred sleep position.

Helix vs. Helix LUXE Mattresses

The Helix and Helix LUXE share some similarities, but there are also some notable characteristics that set them apart. Perhaps the main difference is that the Helix LUXE mattress is designed to be more premium than the Helix mattress. As such, the Helix LUXE also has a higher price point than the Helix mattress. However, with that premium design, there are also some clear benefits.

First, the Helix LUXE is 2 inches taller than the Helix mattress. While the Helix mattress is 12 inches tall, the Helix LUXE is 14 inches tall. If you prefer a mattress with a higher profile, the Helix LUXE may be a good choice for you.

The Helix LUXE also features zoned support, which offers targeted support to help align the spine. The springs in the Helix LUXE are firmer to support the hips and softer to allow the shoulders to sink in.

The top of the Helix LUXE mattress uses a quilted pillow top, which is designed to offer a hotel-style feel and added comfort. The cover of the mattress is designed for breathability to promote cooler sleeping.

The warranty also varies between the Helix mattress and the Helix LUXE mattress. The Helix mattress comes with a 10-year warranty, while the Helix LUXE offers a 15-year warranty.
