GhostBed Flex Mattress Review

GhostBed is a popular option when it comes to bed-in-a-box mattress styles. Founded in 2015 by Nature’s Sleep, GhostBed originally offered the classic memory foam GhostBed mattress. The company focused on simplifying the mattress shopping experience with an online option that is backed by a 101-night sleep trial and extended warranty. In 2023, the company launched the GhostBed Luxe mattress, an all-foam mattress designed to sleep cool and provide additional support.

Following the success of both all-foam mattresses, GhostBed expanded its product line in 2023 to include the GhostBed Flex. This hybrid mattress combines plush top layers of memory foam with a support base of individually wrapped innerspring coils. Hybrid mattresses are designed to give the best of both worlds with the contouring feel of memory foam paired with the support, breathability, and durability of an innerspring mattress. The GhostBed Flex is no exception, as it provides pressure point relief, full body support, and a temperature neutral feel.

In this guide, we take a closer look at the construction, pricing, and availability of the GhostBed Flex mattress. We also include a comparison of the GhostBed Flex versus the original GhostBed and answers to commonly asked questions. Read on for our full review of the GhostBed Flex mattress.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Overview

GhostBed Flex Mattress

GhostBed Flex

All the cooling and pressure relief of other GhostBeds with the added durability and responsiveness of pocket coils.

Construction

The GhostBed Flex mattress is a 13-inch hybrid mattress with multiple layers of foam and a foundation of innerspring coils. The cover features GhostBed’s “Ghost Ice” fabric with cooling fibers woven into the cover. A layer of gel memory foam is added to the quilted cover to increase airflow and provide a plush, conforming feel.

Beneath the cover is another layer of gel-infused memory foam, which draws heat away from the body. This allows the mattress to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses, and also provides pressure point relief and additional cushioning. This layer sits on top of Ghost Flex soft transition foam, which provides contouring support.

The bottom layer of individually wrapped and reinforced coils provides responsive support. The coils support spinal alignment and increase air circulation throughout the mattress. The edges of this layer feature Spirited Edge reinforced coils, which improve edge support for the mattress. This layer also increases the overall durability of the mattress. Beneath the coils is an inch of high-density support foam for added support and durability.

The GhostBed Flex is made entirely in the United States. The foams used are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the mattress is made without the use of harmful toxins, ozone depleters, heavy metals, or phthalates.

Firmness

The GhostBed Flex mattress is softer than the original GhostBed mattress, due to the added layers of plush memory foam. It is only available in one firmness option, and is considered to be medium to medium firm. In general, mattress firmness is subjective as it is affected by body weight and sleeping position.

The top layers of memory foam and quilted fabric cover provide a plush feeling that contours to the shape of your body. The coil support layer adds firmness to the mattress, reinforced by the bottom layer of high-density foam. Overall, this medium firmness provides ample support and comfort for all sleeping positions.

Pricing

The GhostBed Flex is more expensive than the original GhostBed mattresses, due to its more complex construction. Though it is more of an investment, the pricing is about average for a high-quality hybrid mattress. In addition, GhostBed offers seasonal promotions and discounts. The full price for each available size is listed below, before any discounts.

GhostBed Flex Mattress Breakdown

When shopping for a mattress online, it is important to take the following factors into consideration. Be sure to check out our methodology, which breaks down what we look for when we review each mattress.

Is it made from quality materials?

The GhostBed Flex is made from high-quality materials, including durable innerspring coils and high-density foam. The innerspring coils are individually wrapped in fabric, which improves the responsiveness of the coils and prevents motion from transferring across the mattress. The perimeter of this coil layer features two rows of Spirited Edge support coils, which prevents the mattress from sinking in around the perimeter. The high-density support foam bottom layer is designed to add durability to the mattress. All of the foams used are CertiPUR-US certified and made without harmful chemicals. The combination of high-grade innerspring coils and premium memory foam is designed with longevity in mind. In addition, the mattress is constructed in the United States with high-quality manufacturing processes.

How long will it last?

The average hybrid mattress will last 6 to 8 years, and the GhostBed Flex is expected to last at least that long. The high-grade coils increase the lifespan of the mattress by providing consistent support. The bottom layer of the mattress is high-density foam, which lasts longer than the average foam. Though the GhostBed Flex mattress has not been on the market for very long, the premium materials used and the high-quality construction indicate that it should last longer than average.

How well does it conform to my body?

The top layers of the GhostBed Flex are designed to conform to your body. The plush quilted cover and added layers of memory foam provide the close contouring that you would expect from memory foam. This relieves pressure points and helps to keep the spine aligned. The innerspring layer prevents the feeling of fully sinking into the mattress. This layer also features individually wrapped coils that provide responsive support.

Is the edge supportive?

The GhostBed Flex is designed to provide superior edge support, whether you are sleeping or sitting on the edge of the bed. This support primarily comes from the innerspring coil layer, which features two rows of reinforced Spirited Edge support. These coils prevent the feeling of sinking in if you sleep or sit on the edge of the mattress. It also increases the durability of the mattress and prevents sagging along the edges over time. The GhostBed Flex has better edge support than the all-foam GhostBed mattress styles.

Does it sleep hot?

Most of the layers of the GhostBed Flex are designed with temperature regulation in mind. The cover features “Ghost Ice” fabric, which has cooling fibers woven into it. This results in a cool-to-the-touch feel. The memory foam in the cover is quilted for added airflow and gel-infused to draw heat away from the body. In addition, the coil layer improves overall airflow and circulation throughout the mattress. As a result, the Flex mattress sleeps cooler than the average all-foam or hybrid mattress.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

Some off-gassing is to be expected with most bed-in-a-box styles that include memory foam. There is a slight odor when the GhostBed Flex is first unboxed. However, it is barely noticeable and dissipates quickly, especially in a well-ventilated room. The coils improve the overall air circulation throughout the mattress, which also helps to dissipate any off-gassing.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

The thick top layers of memory foam work to absorb movement, preventing motion from transferring across the bed. In addition, the coils are individually wrapped in fabric to reduce motion transfer and offer better motion isolation than the average innerspring mattress. As a result, you shouldn’t feel your partner’s movements throughout the night.

Who is Best Suited for a GhostBed Flex Mattress?

There is more to consider than just construction and pricing when shopping for a mattress online. How comfortable a mattress feels will depend on personal factors and preferences, including sleeping position, body weight, and whether or not you are sharing the bed with a partner.

The GhostBed Flex mattress is designed to be comfortable for all sleeping positions and is especially supportive for those who are average weight. For side sleepers, the thick layers of memory foam provide ample cushioning for the shoulders and hips. However, this may feel less comfortable for those who weigh more than 230 pounds. For back sleepers, the GhostBed Flex keeps the spine aligned with responsive coils and contouring memory foam. Stomach sleepers of average weight will find the medium firmness of the mattress keeps their hips and stomach from sinking into the mattress too far. However, stomach sleepers heavier than 230 pounds may not feel as supported.

The GhostBed Flex is ideal for those who want the contouring of memory foam combined with the responsiveness of innerspring coils. The gel-infused memory foam and coils allow the GhostBed Flex to sleep cooler than the average mattress, which is beneficial if you tend to sleep hot.

For couples, the GhostBed Flex mattress offers minimal noise and optimal motion isolation, so you shouldn’t be disturbed throughout the night. In addition, the innerspring coils add bounce and facilitate movement, making this mattress better for sex than the original all-foam GhostBed mattress.

The price is slightly higher than the average bed-in-a-box memory foam mattress, though the individually-wrapped coils make it more responsive and allow for greater airflow. With an extended warranty and quality construction, it’s a valuable investment that is worth considering.

GhostBed Flex vs. Original GhostBed

The GhostBed Flex and original GhostBed mattress have some similarities. They are both designed to be comfortable and supportive for all sleeping positions. The foams used in both mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified and provide pressure point relief. The original GhostBed mattress has a simpler mixed-foam construction. The top layer is aerated latex for breathability and gentle contouring, while the second layer is gel infused memory foam for a cooling feel and conforming support. These two layers sit atop a high-density polyfoam base.

The construction of the GhostBed Flex mattress is more complex, with multiple layers of foam on top of a durable innerspring coil base. The cover features GhostBed’s Ghost Ice fabric for a cooling feel. The GhostBed Flex is two inches taller, with a height of 13 inches. The GhostBed Flex mattress also has better edge support, as the perimeter is reinforced with Spirited Edge coils. The innerspring layer provides additional bounce and airflow. The more advanced construction results in a higher price point.

Both mattresses are made in the United States and backed by GhostBed’s 101-night sleep trial. While the original GhostBed mattress is covered by a 20-year warranty, the GhostBed Flex has an extended 25-year warranty.

Before purchasing the GhostBed Flex mattress, it is important to consider the following factors.

Sleep Trial

The GhostBed Flex mattress includes a 101-night sleep trial. GhostBed requires a minimum of 30 nights prior to initiating a return in order to give your body time to adjust to sleeping on the new mattress. If you decide to return the mattress after 30 days (before the 101-night trial has ended), GhostBed will coordinate the pick-up and donation of your mattress. Once picked up, GhostBed issues a full refund. There is no charge for return shipping.

Orders shipped to Hawaii and Alaska are considered final sale and are not eligible for the sleep trial. Additionally, orders placed via Amazon are subject to Amazon’s 30-day return policy and are not eligible for the sleep trial.

Warranty

GhostBed backs the GhostBed Flex mattress with a 25-year warranty that is partially prorated. This warranty applies to the mattress itself; the fabric cover is protected by a separate 1-year warranty that covers materials and workmanship. The 25-year mattress warranty covers any indentations that are greater than one inch, and physical flaws in the mattress that result in splits or cracks.

For the first 10 years of the warranty, GhostBed will cover the costs to repair or replace a defective mattress (excluding shipping costs). For years 11 through 25, GhostBed will repair or replace the mattress at a prorated charge. The prorated charge starts at 50% of the original price and increases incrementally over time.

The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. In addition, it applies to the original owner and is non-transferable. The mattress must be registered with GhostBed within 30 days of purchase to be covered. The customer is responsible for all shipping and handling fees associated with repairs or replacements for the entire duration of the warranty. You can read the full warranty details for more information.
