Below we discuss the top five antiperspirants and deodorant for men, who should use them, and how best to use them. Then we’ll explain the key differences between deodorant and antiperspirant and why you might use one versus the other. What is the best deodorant for sweating armpits? What kind of deodorant should I use to stop sweating? What is the best deodorant for men with sensitive skin? We’ll answer all that and more below.

Deodorant vs Antiperspirant

Before the advent of deodorant, which is a recently modern invention, people used perfume and cologne to cover up their smell.

Which is, essentially what you’re doing with deodorant, too. There are a few differences between a deodorant and a cologne, obviously, but the idea is the same.

An antiperspirant is like deodorant but the focus is less on scent and more on its ability to block the odor-causing agents.

An antiperspirant will do two things. First, it closes up your pores so you sweat less.

Then, it kills the bacteria that will eat the sweat and cause that sour smell of body odor.

There are deodorants that do kill bacteria that causes the odor but it doesn’t do anything to prevent you from sweating.

A deodorant can use ingredients like charcoal and baking soda to neutralize the bacteria.

An antiperspirant will use a type of aluminum salt to prevent sweating and also create an environment where the bacteria can’t grow.

Many people have been lead to believe that they should avoid aluminum in their antiperspirant due to health risks Which has many people going back to their trusty deodorant instead. It seems that health risks like cancer and Alzheimer’s are exaggerated and that it is safe to use antiperspirants that contain aluminum salts.

Which one is better to use?

I typically use an antiperspirant since I tend to sweat a lot and deodorant doesn’t control that.

But that is a personal preference of mine. Since I don’t have any fear about using antiperspirant I find it works better for me. If you sweat profusely, I would recommend using one, too.

If you don’t sweat much and are not convinced by the article I linked to about the health risks, then deodorant is a fine way to reduce your body odor. And the list below contains some really good ones.

The bottom line is that if it makes a difference to you then just make sure you read the label as they must be labeled as either deodorant or antiperspirant. If it only says deodorant then you are good to go.

What to look for in a deodorant

I like to go for natural products whenever possible, but as I mentioned I sweat a lot. So this is one of those cases when I use what works best. I don’t want to have anybody suffer if they get in an elevator with me due to a poor choice of deodorant.

Natural deodorants do work great these days, so if you are also conscious about using organic or natural cosmetics then you’re in luck there.

Here are some active ingredients that work well.

Propylene glycol

Clearly, this is not one of the natural ingredients I was talking about. But, it is super effective at keeping you from stinking when it is the active ingredient in a deodorant that isn’t also an antiperspirant.

It is a type of alcohol so it is very effective at killing bacteria so you don’t smell.

Dipropylene glycol is a very common ingredient in cosmetics as it is also a good solvent to reduce oil on your skin and hair.

Is it harmful? Well, who can say for sure? Studies have shown it could be but there is nothing conclusive.

In any case, if you really just don’t want to smell no matter what the cost, then this is the most effective way to take care of that.

Besides, there is a plant-based propylene glycol that is not as harsh as the synthetic and is more environmentally friendly. In fact, Tom’s of Maine uses this as an ingredient even though it is an all natural deodorant.

Baking Soda

This household ingredient is common in natural deodorants as it is very effective at absorbing excess moisture and killing bacteria that can cause odors.

But, you actually need to be careful when choosing a deodorant with baking soda as its active ingredient.

Baking soda is highly alkaline and can cause irritation for people with sensitive skin. Your skin under your arms is particularly sensitive so this is something to think about.

If you see any sign of a rash after you’ve used it, then the culprit is definitely the baking soda and you should switch deodorants right away.

For anybody who doesn’t have sensitive skin or any problems with baking soda, then this is a very effective way to deal with odor and sweating.

A good alternative to baking soda if you are going natural is arrowroot starch. It is highly absorbent and also effective as an antibacterial. Though it isn’t quite as strong as baking soda, this means that it is at least much more gentle since it isn’t alkaline.

Coconut Oil

Another effective and natural ingredient that is becoming common in deodorants is fractionated coconut oil.

It’s a great antibacterial agent so it kills bacteria and fungus very effectively. It also helps to create an environment that will prevent bacteria from growing again until you need to put more deodorant on.

It’s great if you have sensitive skin as it is gentle and won’t irritate.

Best Smelling Men’s Deodorant: Speed Stick Solid Deodorant, Ocean Surf

best deodorant for men

Speed Stick Solid Deodorant is the perfect compromise, one of the best deodorant for men.

It’s a deodorant–not an antiperspirant–but it’s far more effective than many of the organic brands like Tom’s which either make your armpits smell worse or wear off midway through the morning. Plus, it won’t leave white marks or become slimy after a workout.

While Speed Stick isn’t organic, it won’t clog up your sweat glands, and it certainly doesn’t contain aluminum. In fact, it has a relatively short list of ingredients. Unlike many organic deodorants though, Speed Stick lasts all day long. If you work in an office, you can slap on some Speed Stick and walk out the door confident you won’t have to hide your pits away.

Lastly, because it’s only deodorant, Speed Stick is a great deodorant for men for sensitive skin. It feels smooth, and it will never leave you with a red, itchy rash.Check out Speed Stick Deodorant on Amazon!

Best Men’s Deodorant Without Aluminum: Kaiame Naturals Best Natural Men’s Deodorant

best deodorant for men

Kaiame Naturals Best Natural Deodorant is free of aluminum, phthalates, parabens, and troubles. It’s the perfect natural alternative for anyone who has sensitive skin and does their best to avoid products made with harmful chemicals and probable carcinogens. The main active ingredient in this deodorant for men is charcoal. Because it’s made with carbon, charcoal can purify the skin of oil, dirt, and grime. It can even absorb up to 1,000 times its own weight in moisture keeping you clean and dry for hours on end even if you have hairy pits. However, this is a deodorant and not an antiperspirant. This deodorant for men won’t prevent you from sweating–it will only keep you from smelling. While it does sometimes need to be reapplied during the middle of the day, it will mask body odor. This deodorant for men is not made with wax, so it can’t be used as a roll on deodorant. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but it’s worth every penny.Check out Kaiame Deodorant on Amazon!

Deodorant vs. Antiperspirant

Are you looking for deodorant or antiperspirant? Know the difference? Deodorant is just designed to remove body odor while antiperspirant blocks your sweat glands. As it turns out, your sweat doesn’t actually smell. Body odor is a result of the fats and proteins in your sweat mixing with the bacteria on your skin. Apocrine glands, known to produce sweat laced with fat and protein, are concentrated under the arms and in the groin area. Unfortunately, these two places are also breeding grounds for bacteria. Deodorant will neutralize the bacteria on your skin, masking the odor. Antiperspirants, on the other hand, use aluminum salts to dissolve the moisture on your skin. These aluminum salts then form a gel that prevents sweat from staining your clothing. You should apply antiperspirant at night when your skin is completely dry so it’s fully activated when you wake up in the morning. Deodorant and antiperspirant have two different roles, and they are not interchangeable. However, many deodorants for men today are deodorants and antiperspirants. While both are healthy and safe to use, there is reason to believe that the aluminum often used in antiperspirant is linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. Though the evidence is not conclusive, it may be a cause for concern and is worth mentioning.
