Casper Mattress Overview

Casper Mattress

Casper Mattress

Casper’s original, and much loved, all-foam mattress.

Construction

The Casper mattress is 10 inches in height and has four layers. The high-density foam in the base layer provides a strong foundation, lending durability to the mattress. Next is a layer of Zoned Support™ foam that provides tailored support to your shoulders and hips to promote spinal alignment—the foam under your shoulders and legs is gentle, while the foam beneath your hips and core is firmer since these spots need more support. A layer of pressure-relieving memory foam comes next, and finally, the top of the mattress includes a fourth layer of foam that is comfortable and breathable.

The materials used in the mattress help ensure proper spinal alignment. And while most foams tend to retain heat, this mattress utilizes open-cell foam with pores that let any extra hot air escape. Other than that, the Casper doesn’t have many special features—it’s simply a traditional, well-made memory foam mattress.

The foams used in the Casper are certified by the CertiPUR-US program. This means the foams don’t use ozone-depleting chemicals, and they’re safe to have in your house.

Firmness

The Casper mattress is a medium in terms of firmness. This level of firmness is a good fit for couples as neither person will have to compromise too far. The mattress is slightly softer than those with the more traditional medium-firm feel, but it doesn’t have a very deep sink like many memory foam mattresses. The result is great conforming without feeling trapped in the mattress.

The layer of Zoned Support foam might affect how firm the Casper feels to you. The foam in this layer is more firm in the middle of the bed to support your core, but depending on how you position yourself on the mattress and how tall you are, this element of firmness may or may not hit right at your hips.

Pricing

The Casper mattress is priced per size as follows:

SizePrice
Twin$595
Twin XL$645
Full$985
Queen$995
King$1,195
California King$1,195

As far as memory foam mattresses go, the price of the Casper is fairly average. It’s a budget-friendly choice, with the King and California King the only two sizes that get into the four-digit range.

Casper Mattress Breakdown

Below, we dive into the most common questions about the Casper. For more on our mattress review process, check out our methodology.

Is it made from quality materials?

The Casper is made of well-selected, durable materials. The cover is crafted from a polyester that’s tough and long-lasting; the next layer down is a comfortable foam with an open-cell design that keeps the mattress surface cool. The mattress also includes a layer of high-quality and responsive memory foam; a third layer of foam that’s tailored to support your spine; and a dense, durable foam that sets a good foundation for the mattress. And something unique to the Casper that many other mattresses don’t have is the CertiPUR-US certification, which means the materials used do not have ozone-depleting chemicals.

How long will it last?

The original Casper mattress is made of high-quality materials; the foams used in the construction of the mattress are dense and durable. As a company, Casper puts a priority on constantly learning, improving, and developing mattresses that are well-made and will last a long time. You should be able to enjoy this mattress for at least six or seven years. The Casper mattress has a 10-year warranty for manufacturing defects.

How well does it conform to my body?

Memory foam mattresses are generally known for having good conforming abilities, molding themselves to your body. The Casper doesn’t conform quite as much as other foam mattresses since the Casper’s top layer of foam is made from regular polyfoam, which is plush but doesn’t conform as deeply as memory foam. But the mattress still conforms well, especially because of the memory foam found in the second layer; it offers plenty of comfort and pressure point relief. And the fact that it’s not extremely conforming might even be a draw for sleepers who dislike the feeling of sinking too deeply into their mattresses.

Is the edge supportive?

The Casper’s edge support is fairly poor, though this is normal and expected for an all-foam mattress with no coil system. Sleepers will probably experience some sinkage if they sleep on the edge of the bed, especially heavier sleepers. This may be an area where you see some wear and tear over time, too.

Does it sleep hot?

The foams used in the Casper have an open cell construction that’s designed to help air circulate well, regulating the temperature of both the mattress and your body. And since the top layer of the mattress is especially breathable, the Casper sleeps cooler than many all-foam mattresses.

Will it off-gas when it’s delivered?

The Casper will likely have a noticeable smell for the first few hours, but with proper ventilation, it will disappear before long—in extreme cases, it may last a few days. The foams Casper uses in all of its mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified and are made without toxins. The company also uses a water-based adhesive in the foam, and both of these aspects help reduce the smell.

Will I feel my partner move during the night?

Like many foam mattresses, the Casper has good motion isolation. It does carry a little bit of bounce thanks to the top layer of foam. However, the layers of foam under the top layer absorb shock well enough that you shouldn’t be disturbed by your partner or vice versa.

Who is Best Suited for a Casper Mattress?

If you’re a combination sleeper—meaning you sleep in multiple positions throughout the night instead of staying only on your stomach, back, or side—the Casper should be a good fit for you since the top of the mattress is responsive and the foam can accommodate any sleeping position. If you stay in one position all night long, the Casper is good for back sleepers thanks to the firm foam under the hips, and it’s also good for side sleepers because of its conforming properties. However, the mattress may not have quite enough support for stomach sleepers (especially heavier stomach sleepers).

Do you need extra spinal support? The Casper’s special Zoned Support foam helps keep your spine straight. And if you’re worried about being hot at night, the original Casper might be a good fit for you because it doesn’t sleep as hot as many memory foam mattresses—the breathable, open-cell foams are strategically layered to prevent heat retention.

When it comes to the feel of the mattress, keep in mind that the Casper is all-foam. So if you like the bouncy and responsive feel of the coil systems in innerspring mattresses with a strong edge support, you will likely be disappointed here. If you enjoy the closely conforming feel of memory foam, however, the Casper would be a good fit.

Finally, if you sleep with a partner, the Casper should be a good fit because it has fairly good motion isolation. It also accommodates almost all sleeping positions, which is another plus so nobody will have to compromise.

Casper vs. Casper Wave Mattress

Casper has a newer mattress model called the Casper Wave, and there are a few key differences between the original Casper and the Wave. First up is the thickness: the Wave, a luxury mattress, is a few inches thicker than the original (making it a better choice for heavier sleepers). Both have similar supportive base layers, but the Wave has more top layers than the original Casper. The original is also a little firmer.

Sleepers who appreciate the all-foam feel will likely gravitate toward the original Casper, while the Wave has a layer of latex that adds a little bounce, so it’s good for anyone who wants a little more responsiveness. The Wave is also designed to relieve pressure—it includes a layer of Flo Foam, a super-plush polyfoam that’s not present in the original Casper. Both mattresses also approach zoned support differently. While the original Casper features different firmness levels for the legs/shoulders and core/hips, the Wave has contours in the base layer to match your spine’s natural alignment plus gel pods that alter firmness and support at key points.

Keep in mind, too, that the luxurious Wave is relatively expensive, whereas the original Casper is more affordable, making a good choice if you need to stay within budget (the Wave ranges from $1,345 to $2,695 while the original Casper starts at $595 and goes up to $1,195).
